Monica Barrett
Monica Barrett is Associate General Counsel at Rutgers, where she has specialized in the areas of employment and labor law since 1996. Ms. Barrett handles labor arbitrations and administrative hearings before government agencies, including the New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission, United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights. She also provides advice to University officers in developing and implementing personnel policies and labor positions, and oversees outside counsel in employment and labor related matters.
Ms. Barrett has been practicing in the area of higher education law since 1990. Previously, she was employed as Associate University Counsel at Cornell University and Assistant General Counsel at Barnard College. After serving as a law clerk for New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division Judge Sylvia B. Pressler, Ms. Barrett began her legal career as a litigation associate at the law firm of Lowenstein Sandler in Roseland, N.J.
Ms. Barrett has given a variety of conference presentations, including “ADA and Sec. 504: Handling the Emotionally or Mentally Unstable Employee,” “Psychiatric Disorders and the ADA: Up Close and Personal,” and “New Realities in Sex Discrimination and Sexual Harassment.” Ms. Barrett holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and a B.A. in philosophy from Wellesley College where she was awarded Wellesley Scholar Honors.
