Melissa Dutton Schaffer

Melissa Dutton Schaffer focuses her practice on litigation and the University’s general affairs. Prior to joining Rutgers, Melissa served as Deputy Director of the Administrative Law Practice Group in the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety.  In that role, she oversaw high-priority and complex litigations at both the trial and appellate levels for multiple State agencies, including the State colleges and public research universities. Before taking on that role, Melissa spent time working within the Division of Law’s Appellate Unit and the Education & Higher Education Section. Melissa also previously served as Associate General Counsel for The College of New Jersey.

Melissa earned her undergraduate degree in English from Rutgers University–Camden and her J.D. from Widener University, Delaware Law School.
