About Student Clerkship Programs

Our clerkship programs (summer and academic year) are unique because they provide exposure to all of the OGC’s practice areas. The key objectives are to provide clerks with the opportunity to enhance their legal research, writing, and analytical skills, while exposing them to the myriad components of higher education law and the practice of an office of general counsel. In addition, a mentor will be assigned to each clerk to help guide them through their clerkship experience.

Clerks will work with the OGC attorneys on short-term and long-term legal projects and will be encouraged to shadow attorneys during their day-to-day activities, including at client meetings, arbitrations, and hearings. Clerks will be called upon to conduct legal research, review contracts, draft memos, analyze legislation, assist in investigations, and assist in revising campus policies and procedures.

The OGC will make every effort to provide opportunities for Clerks to attend and participate in seminars, training, and continuing legal education programs offered during their Clerkship.

Summer Clerkship Program

The summer program is open to students from any ABA accredited law school. Positions in our summer program are generally filled by students who have just completed their first year or second year of law school. Summer clerkship positions are typically full-time, commencing in late May or early June and continuing through late July or early August. The summer clerkship is currently hybrid, with the in-person requirement taking place in New Brunswick.

Law students from Rutgers University School of Law interested in applying for a position in the OGC’s summer clerkship program should inquire about interviewing through the Rutgers OCI process. Interested law students may also apply on a rolling-basis by using the email below.

Law students from other law schools interested in applying for our summer clerkship program should apply by using the email below. A member of the OGC will respond to discuss your candidacy and the application process for the upcoming summer.

Academic-Year Clerkship Programs

The academic-year program is typically filled by Rutgers Law School students; however, we will consider students from other law schools as well (see application instructions below). Students in our academic year program must be in their second or third year of law school. Academic year clerkships are typically part-time during the fall or spring academic semesters. Clerks are expected to work a minimum of ten (10) hours per week. Hours can be arranged to meet the student’s need, as long as they occur from Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Academic-Year Clerkship Program

Our academic-year clerkship program positions are typically filled by clerks continuing with the OGC from a previous summer clerk position. However, there are times where we may have additional openings for Clerks. These positions are typically filled with Rutgers Law School students. Law students interested in an academic-year law clerk position with the OGC should apply by using the email below. A member of the OGC will respond to discuss your candidacy and the application process for the upcoming academic term.

Academic-Year Externship Program

On occasion, the OGC welcomes part-time externs during the academic year. Externs receive course credit for the work completed while an extern. When evaluating whether to accept an extern for an upcoming academic term, the OGC considers whether there are sufficient projects and opportunities available during the academic term to fulfill the requirements of an externship before agreeing to serve as an externship placement. Law students interested in applying for a part-time externship in the OGC during the academic year should first inquire about the externship process and commitment through their law school’s externship office.

If, after meeting with their law school’s externship office, law students are still interested in pursuing a possible part-time externship in the OGC, students should apply by using the email below. A member of the OGC will respond to discuss your candidacy and the application process for the upcoming academic term.
